Welcome to Sunday Night B-Ball
Sunday Night B-Ball was started by 4 brothers-in-law who enjoyed playing basketball on the weekends. Frustrated by all the ball-hogging, waiting between games, fighting, and overall competitive play that comes along with playground ball, they decided to rent a gym and form their own league. The group started out small, but die-hard as well as revolving members have been regularly showing up to play hoops on Sunday nights since 1999.
Our league members play in a large gym, reserved all to themselves, on Sundays evenings from 4:00-6:00 pm. Although there are no refs, we do require reversible jerseys. Teams are chosen by shooting, and players left out of the game play next (see Rules & Regulations page). We use 2 and 3 points for scoring and games go up to 15. Lag time in between playing is generally no longer than 1 game.
Members pay league fees on a 4-time a year basis, in order to cover the cost of the gym rental. Season fees vary, depending on the amount of Sundays scheduled per season and the number of players signed up to play. The per player price usually ranges anywhere between $100-$150 a season (3 months), to be paid in full, which averages out to about $6 per Sunday.
The 3 main reasons behind the formation of Sunday Night B-Ball are: 1) to get in some good playing, 2) to get in some good exercise, and 3) to get away from all the fighting and ball-hogging, which aren't tolerated. Feel free to drop by the gym any Sunday night and check out our league. Once you pay the full membership fee you can begin playing hoops right away.

Teams from this first lot of ten are chosen according to individual player match-ups (height, ability, age, etc.). The first 5 players to arrive after the first two teams have been selected will have “next,” meaning they will play the winner of the first game. If there are not enough players in the “next” category to establish a full team, then players from the losing team will shoot free throws in order to make up the difference.
GAME BACK:
If there are 16 or more players present, then a ‘Game Back” situation occurs, meaning that some players may have to wait 2 games back before they can play again. If this scenario takes place, then all games will be played to 11 points instead of the regular 15 until the number of players diminishes and the situation corrects itself. If players have to wait 3 games back (21 players), then all games will be played to 9 points.
SCORING:
All games are scored by using 2 points for regular shots and 3 points for shots made behind the arc. Games are played to 15 points unless otherwise decided upon by the players.
SUBS:
You may only give a player permission to sub for you if: 1) you are not present to play that day, or 2) you are present to play but agree to sit out of the game. A player and his sub may not play at the same time.
FOULS:
I’ve broken 3 fingers and 2 toes, chipped 2 teeth and had 2 black eyes along with stitches over my eyebrow – all from either driving to the basket or going for rebounds. None of the players that fouled me ever had the intention of causing harm or doing damage. It’s just part of the game and you must know that going in. Therefore, if you don’t want to take the risk of getting hurt, DO NOT drive to the hoop or try to rebound. If you do drive to the hoop and get hurt, don’t complain – no one is intentionally trying to hurt you; it’s part of the game. You must know that going in to this league.
Calling fouls is based on the honor system. Be honest when calling a foul. Respect the foul called, even if you don't agree with it. It will come back to you.
The player being fouled calls the foul, NOT the player committing the foul. I repeat – NOT the player committing the foul. Don’t assume you fouled a player; let him call the foul.
If you are fouled, say “FOUL” out LOUD. Not everyone is watching you drive to the hoop and most players will continue to play and not respect your foul if you do not announce it loudly to everyone. SPEAK UP.
There are NO charging fouls in the league, just as there are no “3 seconds”, “delay of game”, or “back-court violation” calls. Even in the NBA, charging is one of the most difficult fouls to call because of its subjective nature. If it’s such a controversial call to make in the NBA, imagine how pointless it is to call this foul in our league, which is essentially just a glorified pick-up game. At a park or gym, charging is never a standard call in a pick-up game. No charging calls.
FIGHTING:
Fighting is NOT ALLOWED in the gym. We have nothing against fighting; just don’t waste the rest of the player’s time by indulging in it. Everyone paid good money to play. We shouldn’t have to be held hostage nor waste valuable playing time while you prove your point. If you physically fight, you automatically lose your right to membership in the league. Go ahead; beat each other’s brains out. Knock yourself out (literally), just take it outside and let the rest of us play. If you go outside there won’t be anyone there to break it up, so I guarantee you’ll come back. Don’t waste our time.
IN BOUNDING & CHECK BALL:
If a point is scored, the ball is in bounded at the baseline. If the ball goes out at side-court during play, it will then be in bounded at mid-court. The team currently playing defense may call Check-Ball at anytime before the ball is thrown in, and has the option to have the ball in bounded at mid-court. It is the defensive team’s responsibility to call Check-Ball. If Check-Ball is never called, all play is valid whether players are ready or not.
KICK BALL:
A player shall not kick the ball or strike it with the fist. Kicking the ball or striking it with any part of the leg is a violation when it is an intentional act. The ball accidentally striking the foot, the leg or fist is NOT a violation.
CALLING "FIRST":
In the event of a jump ball situation, the ball will be awarded to the team whose member loudly calls out “FIRST”.
VOTING:
If you have read the above in it’s entirety, then you know the rules going into a game and therefore must play in accordance of them until the game is complete. Only after the current game is finished may a vote take place in order to establish either a new rule or rule change. A vote may NOT be taken regarding an issue in the middle of a game. When a rule change vote is to take place, the new ruling must pertain to the entire league and not just the game at hand.
*Upon joining the league, all players are expected to follow the Rules & Regulations

PAYMENT
Quarterly dues are to be paid IN FULL either present or by mail, by cash or check, in a prompt manner. (You may mail a check to the address given). Starting at the beginning of the new season, all prospective players are granted a 2-week grace period in which to make their payment. If payment is not received in full by the start of the 3rd week of play, they will not be allowed to play until the fee is paid IN FULL. Regardless of partial payment or if there’s a shortage of players for that particular day, at the beginning of the 3rd week all players must pay IN FULL if they want to continue to play. This is because the fee to the LA City Parks for use of the gym was fully paid weeks before, and all players are obligated to pay back what has essentially been loaned to them. Do the right thing. No ifs, ands, or buts.
NEW PLAYERS:
Prospective new members, family and friends are always invited to visit on Sunday. But just because someone has come to visit and play for the night does not give them precedence over a player who has already paid the season fee in full. Therefore, if a decision has to be made as to who will have the opportunity to play; the right will always go to the player who has already paid in full. The only way a player can override this regulation is if there are not enough players or the group approves their play.
COSTS / REBATES:
If there are not enough players to cover the initial new season dues, then a supplemental payment increase will be required from each player in order to meet costs. But, if there is a surplus of players available to cover the initial season dues, then a payment rebate will be issued to each player.
GAMES MISSED:
There are NO refunds or rebates paid for games that a player misses. The dues entitle a player to play as often or as little as desired. Time and amount played is your responsibility. If you won’t be available to play for the majority of the season, then don’t join.
JERSEYS:
Reversible jerseys are provided for a fee for all players. They are your responsibility therefore all jerseys must be washed and cleaned for the next session. If your jersey is lost and/or stolen, then you will have to pay the cost of an additional jersey. To avoid this cost, remember to take good care of it!
REFEREES:
This is basically a pick-up or non-ref league. If the majority of players request referees, either for one session or a series of sessions, then a supplemental payment increase will be required from each player in order to meet the cost for refs.
CONCLUSION:
Basically, our league was formed in order to get away from all the petty issues that accompany street ball and playing in parks – whining over calls, ball hogging, and fighting. The formation and enforcement of these Rules and Regulations assures that our league will remain this way. If you do not like or agree with any of the rules presented, then you have 2 choices:
1) either quit the league and play somewhere else, or 2) take up a vote and change things. Nothing is written in stone. This is not one person’s league; it’s YOUR league. You can change whatever rules you want as long as everyone agrees to and goes along with them. Remember: Majority rules.
*Upon joining the league, all players are expected to follow the Rules & Regulations*
Drop us a line or stop by the gym for more info. Male or Female, young or old, all players are welcome.
We look forward to you becoming a member of our league!
